Dr. Jacob B. Switzer, MD, MBA, is a General Surgeon at Clarus Surgery, providing comprehensive surgical care for patients with a wide range of general surgical conditions. He specializes in open, laparoscopic, and robotic procedures, developing individualized treatment plans that prioritize precision, safety, and the best possible outcomes.
Combining advanced surgical training with a background in medicine and business, Dr. Switzer is committed to delivering patient-centered care through clear communication, thoughtful decision-making, and innovative surgical techniques tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
Dr. Switzer earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating magna cum laude, before earning both his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration from UAB, graduating summa cum laude from the MBA program. He completed his General Surgery Residency at Baptist Health in Birmingham, where he received extensive training in open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery, as well as hernia and abdominal wall surgery, breast disease, wound care, and the surgical management of acute and chronic conditions. Throughout his training, he contributed to surgical research, presented innovative techniques at national conferences, and served in leadership roles that reflect his commitment to advancing surgical education and improving patient care.
Dr. Switzer believes excellent surgical care begins with listening. He takes time to explain diagnoses and treatment options in clear, understandable language while encouraging patients and their families to actively participate in the decision-making process. By tailoring recommendations to each patient’s goals, health, and circumstances, he strives to build trust through honesty, communication, and compassionate care. Working closely with the entire healthcare team, Dr. Switzer is dedicated to providing thoughtful, individualized treatment that supports the best possible surgical outcomes.
Outside of surgery, Dr. Switzer enjoys spending time with his wife and family, playing golf, bass fishing, following sports, and spending time outdoors. Patients and colleagues may also be surprised to learn he mastered solving a Rubik’s Cube in middle school and can solve one in under two minutes.
