DANIEL M. AVERY III
MD
Orthopedic Surgeon
Daniel M. Avery III, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Clarus Surgery specializing in arthroscopic, endoscopic, and open procedures of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Double fellowship-trained in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, Dr. Avery brings a distinctive combination of expertise to patients throughout the Birmingham area.
Combining expertise in sports medicine and upper-extremity surgery, Dr. Avery treats a broad range of orthopedic conditions—from sports-related injuries and fractures to arthritis, tendon tears, and nerve compression disorders.
A Birmingham native, Dr. Avery earned his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Auburn University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he served as Chief Resident, and also trained in pediatric orthopedics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut, followed by a Hand and Microvascular fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Avery has authored numerous scientific articles, review articles, and book chapters related to sports medicine, hand surgery, and orthopedic surgery.
Dr. Avery believes that one of his most important responsibilities as a physician is identifying the correct problem. He takes a thoughtful approach to confirming each diagnosis and pursuing conservative treatment options rather than proceeding directly to surgical intervention. Dr. Avery values continuous research and collaboration with his patients, working with each individual to develop a tailored approach to care and achieve their most desired outcome. Together with his office staff, he is committed to providing the best possible care throughout every stage of the patient experience—from the initial phone call and office visit through treatment and aftercare.
Outside of work, Dr. Avery enjoys spending time with his wife and can often be found cooking, with a particular love for grilling and smoking. His personal philosophy is inspired by the story of the grandfather he never had the opportunity to meet. During the Great Depression, his grandfather approached a railroad foreman looking for work. The foreman inspected his callused hands and told him, “You know how to work, and I will give you a job.” Dr. Avery carries the lesson of this story throughout his life: there is never a substitute for hard work.
